About us

The Society is a local independent charity, not linked to any national organisations and has been in existence since 1895.  It is funded by public donations, legacies and grants.

The Society is helped by many volunteers who give up their time to visit visually impaired people in their own homes, as well as to help with the various activities that the Society provides.

The Isle of Wight Society for the Blind set up a trading arm, Milbrooke Enterprises CIC, in January 2016 with the aim of raising funding through trading.  It is a Community Interest Company with one shareholder, IWSB.  Its community of interest is the visually impaired community of the Isle of Wight.  There is currently one entity housed within Millbrooke Enterprises CIC, which is the dress agency, Dress for Less. Dress for Less currently raises around £15,000 per year for the charity after expenses. It is anticipated that other companies and trading opportunities will be purchased in the future to maintain a regular income for the Society.

It is truly inspiring to work at IWSB The volunteers give so much time and effort to help the Society achieve its goals and there are some extraordinary people who refuse to allow visual impairment to change their lives. - Alex Dinneen
