SHORT STORY WRITING COMPETITION AWARD CEREMONY WITH EXCLUSIVE PHOTOS AND VIDEO

What a turnout! Over two hundred people walked through Newport Minster’s doors on Monday 19th December for the Award Ceremony! A huge thank you to everyone who supported and/or donated.

Thank you to the Lord Lieutenant for IW Major General Martin White, CB, CBE, JP and his wife; the High Sheriff, Robin Courage, MBE and Chairman of Newport Parish Council, Cllr Lois Prior.  Thanks also to our celebrities, Robert Glenister, Katy Manning and Edana Minghella, for allowing me to travel to London and Brighton respectively, to record the winning stories and also to Bob & Carol Bridgestock’s literary agent, David H Headley for allowing us to use their office as a recording studio.

Thanks must also go to the events committee, Bob and Carol Bridgestock, Linda Edge, Jacqueline Gazzard, Maggie & Kelvin Currie, Chris Cane, Ruth Hollingshead, Sue Rutherford and Estelle Thomas. Also thanks to Ruth Hollingshead, Erika Hollingshead, Fletcher Hollingshead, Rachel Jackson, Tim Morris and Michelle Taylor for manning the stalls.

Ricky J entertained the packed house with a selection of festive songs and Emily Scotcher closed the evening with a couple of songs, showcasing her talent.

Finally, we have to thank our patrons, Carol & Bob Bridgestock for choosing the Isle of Wight Society for the Blind to host the event this year.

The event raised approximately £1,000.

Below:  The winner of the 18+ category went to: Sandra Singleton for her story, ‘First Wight Christmas Since …’ recorded by Edana Minghella.  Sandra won £50.00 cash and proceeded to donate it to the Isle of Wight Society for the Blind. Thank you so much Sandra.

Below:  The winner of the 12 – 17 category went to Lily Venables for her story, ‘Wight Christmas’ which was recorded by Robert Glenister.

Below:  The winner of the Under 12 category went to Freya Blamey for her story, ‘A Christmas Surprise’ which was recorded by Katy Manning.  A trophy was presented by Cllr Lois Prior from Newport Parish Council.  This award was accepted by Freya's grandmother, on her behalf.

Below:  There were two special awards; one being for the youngest writer in the competition and that went to Solomon Todd for his story, ‘Moonland’ which was recorded by actress Katy Manning.

Below:  The other award went to Kathleen Marshall who was our oldest entrant at 93 years young!  Margaret also went on to win one of the runner up prizes from the adult category.
