We are asking each child to take part in our Hat and Sunglasses Day on Midsummer Solstice, Thursday 20th June.  With the longest daylight hours and the highest intensity of rays, we have chosen midsummer’s day as the date quite deliberately. To take part we are asking schools to show our short video.

As a Charity, one of our core aims is to work to prevent avoidable Sight Loss. With 48% of Sight Loss being just that, avoidable, our Hat and Sunglasses Day educates children on the importance of protecting their eyes from harmful UV rays which, in later life, causes Cataracts and Macular Degeneration.

We understand telling children to do something at a very young age that will potentially affect them when they are a grandparent, is a difficult concept for them to understand, so our message is fun and engaging, using a short video featuring our characters from our Education Programme.

Further, this year we are launching a competition, asking children to design their own Hat or Sunglasses; the winner will be announced in the County Press after the Summer Holidays and will receive a prize!  To download our Sunglasses and Hat template; click HERE.

Our video, and indeed this competition, tie in with our Education Programme which is offered to all Isle of Wight Primary Schools without any charge. These hour-long sessions are activity-based and, not only reinforce our key avoidable Sight Loss message, but also give children insight into the reality of living with Sight Loss and how they can help others who are.

Our aim is to unite the Isle of Wight against avoidable Sight Loss and would very much appreciate your support to help us spread the message.
