Medina Swimming
Every Monday (1:15pm – 2:15pm)
Sight for Wight book exclusive use of the Medina Swimming Pool in Newport every Monday afternoon for our visually impaired Members. Sight for Wight male and female volunteers provide sighted guide support to and from the changing rooms and poolside. There are lifeguards in attendance throughout. Transport may be available, but please register with Sight for Wight before you join the swimmers at the pool.
Walk & Talk
Every Second Friday of the month
Walk and Talk group, is an alternative to our Striders’ group. This involves a walk around two miles ending with a venue for coffee and cake.
Wednesday Low Vision Drop-in
Every Wednesday (10.00am – 11.30am)
Every Wednesday between 10.00am and 11.30am we hold a Low Vision drop-in session. This coincides with the coffee morning and allows you to view and try the Low Vision equipment we have at the Society without the need for an appointment. If this time is not suitable for you then you are welcome to call the Society to make an appointment to view our Low Vision equipment.
Thursday Mix & Mingle Social Group
Every Thursday (10.30am – 2.00pm)
The Thursday Mix & Mingle Group for VI Members meet every week at Millbrooke House to socialise. Coffee and tea are provided but please bring a packed lunch to enjoy. In the afternoon the group welcomes volunteers who come in to read from various books about local history, general fiction or, a more popular choice, comedy.
Striders
Last Friday of every month
Striders walk on many different routes around the Island and finish off with lunch at a pub or restaurant near to the walking route. This group is available to all visually impaired Members who like longer walks in the countryside. Sight for Wight volunteers provided sighted guide support throughout.
Golf
Once a month on Sunday
A group of golfers meet once a month at Westridge Golf Club in Ryde. The group go onto the driving ranges and out onto the green and instructors are available.
IT Accessibility Sessions
Once a week, every Monday
We have our I.T. Accessibility Officer, Sam, on hand to give one-to-one help with accessibility features on your computer, laptop, tablet or phone. It is essential you pre-book so please call ahead.
We will help as much as we can but if you are looking for lessons on how to use a computer then please contact us for AGE UK course dates.
Monthly Book Group
Second Wednesday of Every Month
Sight for Wight hold a book group on the second Wednesday of each month at Millbrooke House, Newport. The group runs from 2.00pm for about an hour and discuss the last month’s book and then hand out the book for the next month. Books are available on USB stick or CD. Refreshments are provided and guide dogs are welcome. There is no charge to join the book group. If you would like more information please call Susan on 01983 522205 or email: enquiries@iwsb.org.uk
Wednesday Coffee & Chat
Every week (10.00am – 11.30am)
We hold a coffee morning each week on a Wednesday at Millbrooke House from 10.00am till 11.30am. All are welcome to join us for a cup of tea or coffee and cake. The cost is £2.00 and the group is open to all, not just Members.
On the first Wednesday of each month we are joined by the Macular Society for their monthly meet up.
On the second Wednesday of each month we are inviting people to bring along a friend, relative, neighbour to enjoy coffee and cake with us.
On the third Wednesday of each month we will be joined by Laura Gooljar, the local ECLO (Eye Clinic Liaison Officer) from St Mary’s (starting in August).
On the fourth Wednesday of each month we will have a trustee/member of staff on hand to answer questions about the charity.
Yoga
Once a week, every Tuesday
Yoga at Millbrooke House is between 1:45pm and 2:45pm. Come along and try gentle yoga. Just £4.00 which includes refreshments.
Fortnightly Tennis
Every 2 weeks, on a Monday
Tennis is held at Ryde Mead Tennis Club on a Monday between 9.30am and 10.30am. The club is behind Yelfs in Church Lane, Ryde. Volunteers of the club are on hand to assist. This is weather dependant.
Eye on Social
Once a Month
This group is held once a month and is open to everyone; members, volunteers and friends so please come along and support us. The cost is £3.00 which includes refreshments.
Godshill Coffee Morning
First Tuesday of the Month
The group meets at The Old Smithy Coffee Shop, Godshill from 10:30am – 12.00pm. Volunteers are on hand to chat every month.
Our Place Community Cafe
Second Tuesday of the Month
This group meets at the West Wight Sports Centre, Moa Place, Freshwater from 10:30am. A member of staff will always be there.
Our Place Ventnor
Fourth Thursday of the Month
This group meets at St Catherine’s Church, Ventnor from 10:30am. A member of staff will always be there.
Art with Maddy
Second Wednesday of the Month
These lessons are held at the Parklands Centre, Park Road, Cowes between 10:00am and 12:00pm. The cost is £10.00 which also includes all materials.
Activities – Special Events & Outings
In addition to the regular groups and activities identified above, every quarter we arrange two or three additional special events or outings for our VI Members. These include visits to local attractions and a variety of activities to cater for the diverse interests of our Members.
We always involve the support of Sight for Wight volunteers to provide sighted guide support.
